Air Tanzania B737-200 crashes in Mwanza

The beleaguered Tanzanian national airline suffered another setback yesterday, when one of its remaining aircraft, an aged B737-200 crashed while attempting to take off from the lakeside town of Mwanza.

It was confirmed by sources at Mwanza Airport that while on the take off run some of the aircraft's tires burst, sending the plane into a skid from which the crew was unable to recover, before it eventually slid off the runway to a halt.

Passenger ferries trapped by Baltic ice

As many as 50 vessels have been trapped in ice in the Baltic Sea, with a number of passenger ferries among those stranded.

Many of the vessels were attempting to navigate passage from Finland to Sweden, subsequently becoming stuck in the Gulf of Bothnia or Baltic Sea.

Pilot with fake licence arrested before taking off with 101 passengers

A pilot suspected of flying using a fake licence for over a decade has been arrested whilst preparing for take-off in a jet bound for Turkey with 101 passengers on-board.

Coast Guard helicopter crashes in Utah mountains

SALT LAKE CITY – A Coast Guard helicopter crashed Wednesday morning in remote Utah mountains after providing security at the Winter Olympics, and three people were airlifted to local hospitals, officials said. ‘Difficult’ year sees Lufthansa slip to loss

Deutsche Lufthansa AG slipped to a €112 million (£100 million) loss in 2009, as the global airline industry struggled to cut capacity in the face of falling demand.

The loss at the Cologne-based company compared with a net profit of €542 million (£490 million) for the financial year 2008.
